FM Logistic is intensifying its sustainable transformation, relying on NG Concept, its expert subsidiary in logistics and industrial real estate. Together, they have a clear ambition: construct and operate ever more sustainable buildings, aligned with the Group’s decarbonisation objectives and capable of anticipating the logistics needs of tomorrow. Through a series of concrete initiatives and recognised international certifications, FM Logistic and NG Concept are continuing their investments for an ever more sustainable and resilient supply chain. This dynamic is fully in line with the strategic roadmaps of the two entities, consistent with the highest environmental standards.
Concrete initiatives for more sober, intelligent and responsible warehouses
To support the sustainable transformation of the Group, NG Concept is leading an ambitious strategy based on three priority axes (3R): Reduction of carbon footprint, with the systematisation of life cycle analyses (LCA); Reduction of energy consumption, with an objective of energy neutrality; and Reduction of costs, thanks to optimisation of used resources and materials. In line with the Group’s vision, the subsidiary designs and builds logistics infrastructures combining performance, resilience and environmental requirements, integrating innovative solutions and sustainable standards from the design stage. Among the flagship initiatives:
- In Spain, at the Illescas platform, FM Logistic has expanded its photovoltaic installation to 500 kWp, which covers 69% of the center’s energy needs. This 76,096 m² platform, which is LEED Gold® certified, is also the only logistics center in Spain with a registered hydrogen plant that runs 100% on renewable energy. Currently, solar panels have been installed on more than 14 platforms worldwide, with 9 additional projects under construction. The current installed capacity of 3,294 kWp is expected to double before the end of 2025.
- The Group also innovates by testing new materials for warehouse construction. Among the notable advances: industrial paving Ecofreeplan made of low-carbon concrete incorporating recycled metal fibers from tires, allowing a 95% reduction in the carbon footprint compared to a conventional frame. The efficiency of the paving components makes it possible to reduce its thickness, for even greater sobriety in the use of resources. Wooden frames were also tested and will be deployed in future warehouses, reinforcing the Group’s commitment to sustainable materials and the reduction of the building’s CO2 emissions thanks to the carbon sinks created by these frames.
- In France, several eco-responsible projects are carried out to reduce its environmental footprint while preserving local biodiversity. The use of bio-based paints and materials, such as those made from algae, in the Mormant platform’s offices is a great example of this approach. In addition, innovative water filtration solutions, such as the installation of reeds outside the Escrennes platform, illustrate the Group’s desire to rethink the layout of its platforms to optimise the use of natural resources. Finally, the massive installation of electric charging stations for soft mobility contributes to FM Logistic’s commitment to a more sustainable future, with 63 already active terminals and 74 under construction in France.
FM Logistic and NG Concept continue their commitment to more sustainable logistics by obtaining several major international certifications, such as BREEAM, HQE™ and LEED®. These recognitions attest to the high environmental performance of their infrastructures, both for new buildings and for existing sites. Obtaining particularly demanding certifications such as BREEAM In-Use in Châlons-en-Champagne, and LEED® O+M: EB in Olszowa and Błonie, highlights a pioneering approach favoring reasoned land management based on the optimisation of what already exists. This approach is part of a strategy of sobriety and sustainable development of infrastructure.
“Since 2012, we have been certifying our new sites according to demanding standards such as LEED® and HQE™. These certifications reflect our desire to fundamentally transform the way we design and build our logistics infrastructure. Today, with BREEAM In-Use and LEED® O+M: EB, we go further: rather than systematically building from scratch, we choose to optimise what already exists to reconcile land sobriety, operational performance and reduction of the carbon footprint. Our ambition is clear: to make each project a benchmark in terms of environmental excellence”, explains Audrey Gerard, sustainable development director at NG Concept.
“Certifying our logistics centers not only confirms our sustainable commitment, but also drives our commitment through innovation and continuous, tangible and measurable improvement. At FM Logistic Ibérica, we work every day to make sustainability not just a purpose, but always an operational reality. This vision guides us in every decision, from the design of our warehouses to the choice of every energy source to reduce our emissions and be energy efficient,” adds Leire Armendáriz, Technical Director: Business Studies, Project Implementation and Sustainable Development at FM Logistic Ibérica.
A global, long-term investment in the service of sustainable performance
These actions, carried out by NG Concept and FM Logistic, are part of a broader trajectory, to build a supply chain that is efficient, sustainable and resilient. FM Logistic has already reduced its CO2 emissions by 50% in five years and today supplies 79% of its platforms with green electricity. The Group wants to go even further. The company now intends to accelerate the movement, aiming for 100% green electricity by 2025, and carbon neutrality of its warehousing activities by 2030.
“Because we have a central role to play in the environmental transition, we want to go further and exceed standards, to bring the entire sector on board with us. By integrating innovative solutions and rethinking our infrastructure, we are proving that a more sustainable and resilient supply chain is possible. Innovation and respect for the environment are deeply rooted in FM Logistic’s DNA. The initiatives carried out on the ground, all over the world, show that every local action counts, and that they are essential to our collective success. Now, we must scale up: systematise the most sustainable solutions, concretely, operationally, without delay. Acting on transport is essential, but it is not enough: we must transform our infrastructures, making them real levers of environmental performance”, added Penelope Laigo, Group sustainable development and QHSE director, FM Logistic.
In line with its roadmap, the Group continues to invest in environmentally friendly infrastructure and technologies. This deeply collaborative dynamic is embodied in a multitude of impact projects, like the logistics fresco co-constructed with Club Demeter. By asserting their joint leadership in the sustainable transformation of the sector, FM Logistic and NG Concept demonstrate that efficient logistics can also be responsible and resolutely focused on the future.
